Our story

J Toms and Sons have been milling and supplying timber since 1888, in a business that now spans four generations.

Originally mobile, we’ve been based in the Glynn Valley area in the heart of Cornwall for over a century now.

We’ve supplied timber for activities  including tin mining and film making, with a lot of unusual things in between, but most of what we do is very normal.

We offer a personal service to all, supplying quality timber in a variety of sizes that you can’t always buy off the shelf.

We primarily work with Oak, Douglas Fir and Larch, milling beams, lintels, posts, waney-edge cladding, wide boards and many other products.

Most of our softwood is sourced from within Cornwall but, these days, the oak usually comes from further afield.

Attention to detail...

We have four generations of saw-milling experience and we take care over our work.  With the attention to detail that comes with decades of knowledge and experience, we aim for accuracy with our dimensions.

We hate it when there are excessive sawing marks – we only supply timber that makes us proud; wood that we would happily use ourselves.

We’re a traditional country sawmill with ‘old school’ values and approach.

We have customers from all walks of life; the general public, businesses, schools and big organisations including the National Trust and Forestry Commission.
